The project is aimed to assist the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to enhance its capabilities in earthquake monitoring and earthquake related research. The project consists of two components:
- Technical capacity building: Provide the assistance and cooperation in earthquake hazard and earthquake risk estimation applying the most recent tools on the city of Quetta that has been repeatedly damaged by strong earthquakes. This will expand on the experience from Phase I of the Pakistan – Norway cooperation on applying earthquake hazard methodologies in a hybrid probabilistic approach, and further include the housing inventory of Quetta to produce possible earthquake loss scenarios. The latter is aimed at identification of the most vulnerable components.
- PMD established a Tsunami Early Warning System with the help of UNESCO-IOC for the monitoring of tsunami generation in the Arabian Sea. Through the present cooperation PMD will prepare tsunami models for the Arabian Sea, both from earthquake sources and from submarine slide sources.
The project represents an expansion of the current cooperation between Pakistan and Norway within the field of earthquake monitoring and earthquake hazard assessment. Financing is made possible from the Royal Norwegian Embassy to Pakistan.
